For my class, COMM 323 Leadership & Events Management, I have been asked to conduct a SWOT analysis of a local organization, then conclude with a recommendation for an event proposal that will help meet this company’s needs. Because animal rescue is so dearly important to me and because I sincerely admire the work that this organization has done, I will be choosing Richmond Animal League for my assignment, and will be analyzing their internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as their external opportunities and threats.

RAL is a non-profit organization based in Chesterfield County, Virginia whose mission is “committed to saving lives by giving hope, help, and loving homes to animals in need”. Their vision is that “all cats and dogs are in a loving home with access to the support they need to thrive” (Richmond Animal League, 2026). They partner with over 60 municipal shelters and rescues to transfer, care for, and adopt out animals that need homes. They also run their own “loving spay and neuter clinic” in which, since 2010, they have performed over 100,000 of these surgeries, including on feral cats to reduce pet over-population (Richmond Animal League, 2026).

SWOT Analysis

  Strengths

  1. Richmond Animal League has an established partnership with Best Friends’ Animal Society, the largest animal rescue sanctuary in the United States (Best Friends Animal Society, 2026). This strengthens its reputation and credibility in the animal welfare society.

  1. The organization has built a strong reputation and is well known in the Central Virginian region since its founding in 1979, contributing to community trust (Richmond Animal League, 2026).

  1. Richmond Animal League works with a diverse and well-organized team, including its spay and neuter clinic, its shelter, adoption, and foster services, the fundraising and communications department, the human resources volunteer management team, and the administrative team” (Richmond Animal League, 2026). This allows the shelter to maintain a tight-knit operation that runs smoothly and efficiently.

Weaknesses

  1. Because Richmond Animal League prioritizes supporting government run shelters, stepping in when they reach max capacity, it does not accept owner surrenders or lost animals (Richmond Animal League, 2026). This may limit certain engagement and cause frustration and disappointment among the community.

  1. As a non-profit organization, they rely heavily on outside funding such as donations and grants. This can create ongoing stress on the organization to secure financial resources, as meeting donation demands require a significant amount of time, resources, and energy (Raj, Walters, & Rashid, 2017, p. 148).

  1. The organization’s dependence on volunteers and fosters could create issues regarding staffing inconsistency, especially during larger operations like organizational events which are often reliant on volunteer efforts (Raj, Walters, & Rashid, 2017, p. 40 & 70).

Opportunities

  1. Social media platforms are absolutely crucial for organizations, as marketing often hinges on this media success. Utilizing these platforms can help organizations promote awareness, enhance loyalty, and obtain new clientele (Raj, Walters, & Rashid, 2017, p. 235). For example, Facebook works with verified non-profits so that their users can begin donation campaigns to their causes.

  1. Partnering with local businesses is also a good idea, such as small pet stores, as this helps boost visibility and allows the supply chain to meet the organization’s needs (Raj, Walters, & Rashid, 2017, p. 287).

  1. Hosting community events such as adoption days or donation days can strengthen public image and increase adoption rates.

Threats

  1. High animal intake rates within the organization due to animal overpopulation and overcrowding in municipal shelters, has been a significant threat, especially since COVID-19. These high intake rates contribute to stress on resource demand.

  1. There is ongoing competition with breeders and the demand for purebreds pets, as many people are likely to assign personality based off breed alone and feel safer choosing purebred animals. Because shelters normally house mixed breeds, this can reduce adoption rates (Archer, Hall, & Andrukonis, 2025).

  1. There is always the rising cost of animal care products and veterinary services, which continues to place strain on shelters like Richmond Animal League. Especially during the last few years, inflation has risen and the cost of goods and services has increased significantly (Causa, Soldani, & Luu, 2023).

Event Recommendation

After conducting my SWOT analysis, I believe that one of the simplest but most strategic events the shelter could hold is a “Community Adoption Day”. Hosting this event at a nearby, well-known park, such as Maymont or Forest Hill Park, would be a beautiful option. This would provide ample space and strong community visibility, since these parks are frequently used to hold large public gatherings.

The event could feature several designated, safely enclosed play areas where adoptable dogs, cats, and other animals can interact with potential adopters in a low-stress environment outside the animal shelter. Hosting this event on a weekend, when many people will already be at the park, would help attract visitors and maximize attendance by exposing people who may not already know about the shelter. Partnerships with local food vendors would also increase attendance by creating opportunities for collaboration and service. Both partnerships with local vendors, as well as individual tables set up to receive donations would function as effective fundraising strategies, as discussed in our textbook (Raj, Walters, & Rashid, 2017, p. 145). In addition to animal adoption areas, the event would include a table with volunteers ready to share information about the shelter and their spay and neuter clinic, educating people on their organization’s mission and services.

This event's multi-faceted approach achieves many benefits, supporting community outreach and fundraising efforts. Overall, this event would address many of the issues from the SWOT analysis, including improving peoples’ perception of shelter pets, strengthening connections with local businesses, and spreading awareness of their mission. Most importantly, this event gives Richmond Animal League’s animals a greater opportunity to find a home, which fulfills their vision.
